Charles Selle of the Chicago Tribune writes:
Before there was Walmart, before there were dollar stores, there was Big Gurnee Discount. It’s where you went for a real deal on everything from clothing to ice skates to work boots to school supplies.
Big Gurnee flourished in the 1960s and 70s under the leadership of Joe Vogler, a man who became well known in Lake County for his sales and political acumen, along with being a public guardian for more than 20 years.
As Big Gurnee Discount was closing, Vogler then helped open the Big Gurnee Discount Furniture Store, across the parking lot from the original namesake. He later owned it, changing its name to Gurnee Discount Furniture.
